Macro lenses work the best but you can also turn any current lens you own into a close-up macro lens by using extension tubes. Even the tubes with electronic connections will be much cheaper than a single lens.

So any ex tube should work? Anything worth looking at over another? Or are they all pretty much the same?

I think they're all pretty much the same as far as function. The difference would be in their construction. OEM is the most reliable and the most expensive. Of the third-party brands, Kenko is the top rated but they also run $200 a set. I didn't want to spend that much just to experiment with macro. So, I purchased a set of cheap AF extension tubes with metal mounts from Amazon for $50 and they worked great.

Here's an image I shot of some bracelets that a friend made for a fundraiser. I used all three tubes in the set (13mm, 21mm & 31mm) with my 24-105L and zoomed all the way out. I was about 5-6 inches from the bracelets. The minimum focusing distance of that lens without the tubes is approx 18"

Yup. I have a set that looks identical. They go in between the lens and the body, reducing the focusing distance and increasing the depth of field.

That's not always the fault the extension tubes. Some DSLR cameras and lens combos are not capable of focusing in low light or small apertures. My Canon 6D was able to focus with all of my lenses except the 50mm f1.8 "nifty-fifty". But that lens is known to focus-hunt on most cameras by itself anyways lol

Wow I just learned something, always wanted a macro lens, because taking pics of my custom hot wheels models is ever so difficult with my little camera.

It's just like trucks man, it adds up FAST.

If I had the cash, I'd be spending $5k minimum on a new camera and lenses lol

Thanks for all the info, now to try and not go broke buying all this stuff lol

Yeah, you gotta be careful. It's called G.A.S - Gear Acquisition Syndrome

lol

If I had that cash it would be a down payment on just a camera body! haha

Search YouTube for CHDK and your camera. You will find tutorials there

I picked up a new lens a few days ago. It's the Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 VC. I haven't gotten to go out and play with it much except here at home

I really need to try to get back into photography. I really enjoy it as a hobby and have a halfway decent camera to play around with. Its a Nikon 1 with the standard lens. I'd like to eventually get some of the others they have for it, just don't have the money for it.
