I've had a couple of PM's from people asking how I raised the front bumper on my GMC to get rid of the plastic piece. It can be done to fit the SS Bumper or a 1500 Chevy cap.
I used washers to raise the bumper for a couple reasons. First you can fine tune the height of the bumper so that the gaps are even all around. Second, I thought it was easier to use washers than to cut and weld spacers.
Start out by taking off the grille shell so you can reach four of the bolts that hold the bumper on. After you get those four there are brackets on each side of the bumper with two additional bolts on each bracket.
Bolts removed:
Bumper Removed with brackets attached but loose:
Washers and longer bolts I used:
Next you have to modify the bracket that bolts to the frame and to the bumper. You have to do this so it clears.
The Bracket and how I cut it:
The bracket mounted with washers to raise it. I painted mine so it wouldn't rust so bad.
With the bolts in and fitted up with the raised bracket. This was before I re-drilled the side brackets and that is why the bumper is sagging so bad.
With side brackets moved up and mounted:
I took the wheels off to make it easier to drill because I was doing this by myself. And to clarify I had just taken the jackstands out because I wasn't under the truck anymore and was about to put the wheels back on.
Finished:
Couple things:
I didn't remount my tow hooks, to do that you are going to have to figure something out.
I didn't take any pictures but you are going to have to trim the top plastic where the openings for the tow hooks are or else they will rub on the ends of the frame.
I only used two of the bolt holes to re attach the bumper in the middle, my bumper hasn't moved at all in the last 7 months and I have stepped up on it more than a couple times.
I know I missed a lot and it seems short. I Kept forgetting to take pictures along the way so if there are any questions let me know.
I used a dremel to cut the plastic spacer off the grille shell.
Go slow grille shells aren't cheap.
Having two people will make everything a lot easier, it took me 5ish hours by myself with multiple runs to the hardware store and lunch.
Be safe :imo
