cant you recess the sub into the box while still allotting the correct airspace?

my undertheseat box is recessed, but mounting depth is mounting depth, then alloted space for excursion, there is only 7 inches on the VERY bottom when we measured, then go 11 inches up and remeasure, you loose depth
