Candying tail lights

I want to candy the tails on my Suburban. I purchased a can of VHT tail light candy paint. I've been hearing mixed things about it. I've heard people say that this stuff is garbage. And others claim it works great. Im wondering if the people with problems applied it worng or didnt prep correctly. Is there any special steps (preparation work) that I should take?
I was thinking I should maybe have them clear coated after spraying them with this stuff. Thoughts?

Prep work is where people slack and then they complain the product didn't work. I used vht on my tails and aside from some clear issues on my end, they've held up great. Best cheap mod I've done.

Yes get them cleared at least two layers.

I used that stuff on mine like a year and a half ago and it held up fine I just did like 4 coats and it made them look really tinted, almost black in pictures

apply in extremely light coats or else it will shrink something major on you as it starts to dry. worked great for me. 7 super light coats and 3 coats of clear

Works great here. Did a bunch of light coats, and then used automotive clear. Dont use the rattle can BS, it'll crack/shrink/fog IMO.

I'm thinking about using the Eastwood 2k Aero spray clear. Its a rattle can clear, but its a two part catalyst. Its would be a lot cheaper than paying a shop to clear them.

Same way you prep everything that's smooth plastic...scuff with a Scotchbrite and clean. you can use Bulldog adhesion promoter if you want.

Clean them with apc (claybar if they're really nasty)

I didn't scuff or sand mine, just sprayed Bulldog Adhesion promoter on 2 coats, sprayed VHT, sprayed clear. Done.

If you spray enough clear (canned or otherwise) you can always wet sand them down so they'll be super slick.

When using the scotchbright I use Dawn liquid soap and kinda wet sand it?

No, you just want a light scratch to them, enough for the spray to "bite" to it. If you press too hard or scuff too much you'll see it in every layer above it.

You want it so that it just barely looks cloudy, just enough to take the shine off.

you can wet sand with dawn soap. id probably use a grey scotch bright. no need to put a lot of pressure. put the scotch bright in your hand and just scuff it up, light pressure. dawn soap will also degrease it.
